Pune man files PIL against nuke project

MUMBAI: A Pune resident has approached the Bombay High Court against the Jaitapur nuclear power project.

Hemant Patil in his public interest litigation has urged the court to order an inquiry into the environmental impact of the project on villagers, animals and agriculture.

Patil has asked that a court commissioner be appointed to look into the pollution likely to be caused by the project.

Life term for setting wife ablaze

PUNE: The court of principal district and sessions judge Anant Badar on Tuesday sentenced Popat Dhumal (35) of Bhor a life in prison for murdering his wife Swati on January 15, 2007.

Nine booked for not filing VAT returns

PUNE: The sales tax department has lodged complaints with the police against nine dealers for failing to file returns under the Maharashtra Value Added Tax Act, 2002, within the stipulated time. Cyber cell alerts people on fake lottery calls

PUNE: The cyber cell of the Pune police has urged people to stay alert to protect themselves against fake lottery calls and e-mails. Most of these phone calls and e-mails were found to have originated from Pakistan.

Two held for chain-snatching

PUNE: With the arrest of two men, the crime branch of the Pune police claim to have solved 42 cases of chain snatching. The police have recovered 85 tolas of gold worth Rs 24 lakh from Shamsuddin alias Imran Abdul Sayed (30) of Dandekar bridge and Raju Mohan Baingya (29) of Parvati Paytha. The police have also arrested three jewelers who allegedly purchased stolen chains from the suspects. Continue reading

Committee members worried about fate of city’s heritage structures

PUNE: The draft of heritage regulations to monitor the city’s heritage structures was prepared by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in 1999, but till date nothing has come of it. Members of the PMC’s Heritage Committee were hoping that these regulations would eventually find a place in the city’s new Development Plan (DP) due in December, but fear that this will not happen. If these heritage regulations do not find a place in the new DP, the entire exercise of listing the heritage structures in the 23 merged villages and upgrading the current list of structures in the core city will be rendered redundant. It is because of the absence of proper regulations that the number of grade II and III structures in Pune has reduced significantly as there is no rule that prohibits owners from pulling them down. In five years, city’s crime graph climbs 15%

PUNE: Crime in the city is 15% higher since 2005 when 11,817 cognizable offences were registered to 13,602 in 2010. However, the all-time high of 14,467 crimes in the five-year period was registered in 2008.

An analysis of crime figures in various cities as brought out in the latest ‘Crime in India’ report for 2010 by the National Crime Records Bureau ( NCRB) has new aspects. In all, 3,68,883 cognizable crimes were registered in 35 cities with Pune accounting for 3.7% of the total crimes. Continue reading
