5-yr-old boy dies after falling into borewell near Pune

June 17, 2007

Pune News: A five-year-old boy, who fell into a borewell while playing at a village in Shirur taluka of the district on Sunday, died in a hospital after being rescued, official sources said. Sonu Shivaji Deshmukh was trapped at about 20-feet inside the 150-feet narrow borewell since 1030 hours after falling into it.

He was rescued after a seven-hour ordeal and immediately taken to a hospital in Shirur in an unconscious state where the boy died at about 1800 hours, Tehsildar Udaysinh Bhonsale said.

The operation to rescue the boy was launched by villagers of Vadagaon Rasai before the local administration stepped in to coordinate the work in which two teams from Pune were specially summoned and CRPF personnel from an adjoining camp also chipped in, he said.

The boy was taken out of the borewell at about 1730 hours and taken to the hospital. However, the boy could not be saved, Bhonsale said.

"The body would be handed over to the family after completion of all formalities, including post-mortem," Shirur police station Inspector Namdev Bhale said.

"We plan to register a case in connection with the incident", he added.
