News: The debate over fixing property
tax rates for financial year 2007-2008
has delayed the finalisation of tax
bills. Citizens of Pune are unlikely
to get property tax bills by June-end
.
This
was admitted by municipal commissioner
Pravinsinh Pardeshi on Tuesday while
replying to a question raised by BJP
corporator Ashok Yenpure.
Yenpure said that normally citizens
receive the tax bills in April — the
first month of the new financial year
— and citizens who pay the bills
within 30 days are give a rebate in
taxes.
“This year, the tax department is yet
to finalise the tax bills. How will
citizens get the benefit of the
rebate? Also, if the payment of the
bill is delayed , who will be held
responsible ?” Yenpure said.
Congress corporator Abhay Chhajed said
that every year by April-end , the
municipal corporation collects
property tax of Rs 25 crore.
“A delay in issuing the bills will
result in loss of one or two months’
interest on Rs 25 crore,” he said.
Pardeshi said the finalisation of the
tax bills was delayed as the tax
revision proposals could not be
submitted before the stipulated
February 20 deadline , owing to the
election code of conduct.
He
assured that the issue would be sorted
out at the earliest and that the bills
issued shortly.
