News: Failure on the part of the Pune
Municipal Corporation to build a road
divider on Sanjay Gandhi Road has led
to the traffic police shelving a plan
to decongest the Pune Railway Station
area.
The
Maharashtra State Road Transport
Corporation (MSRTC) had sought
introduction of two-way traffic on
Sanjay Gandhi Road from Pune Railway
Station to Maldhakka.
Traffic snarls are common in the
vicinity of the railway station. To
decongest the area, the city traffic
branch and Pune Municipal Corporation
(PMC) had agreed to the plan for
two-way traffic movement. The PMC was
asked to construct a road divider and
remove the traffic island opposite the
railway station.
“We had communicated our suggestion to
the PMC during the meeting of traffic
mobility committee last year. It was
decided that a road divider will be
constructed and the traffic island
will be removed,” said police
inspector Milind Patil, in-charge of
Cantonment division of traffic branch.
The traffic plan, designed by College
of Engineering, Pune is yet to see the
light of the day. “The Kasba Peth ward
office, which was to undertake the
job, was closed down and the work got
stalled,” said a PMC official.
The Sanjay Gandhi Road has been
operating as a one-way since 2005.
According to the MSRTC, the road had
been reduced to a hub of private
transport operators with their buses
and taxis occupying a major portion of
the carriageway.
